NYX Istanbul Soft Matte Lip Cream Review, Photos, Swatches

NYX Istanbul Soft Matte Lip Cream ($5.99) is a cool-toned light pink.  Soft Matte Lip Creams are interesting products as they're neither a lipstick nor a gloss.  They're housed in typical lip gloss packaging (doe foot applicator included) and although the product appears to be run of the mill, the formula is quite different - it's a mix between lipstick and gloss and has a creamy, mousse-like texture.

Lip Creams are easy to apply - they glide on smoothly like a gloss then quickly dry down to a matte finish. According to NYX, Soft Matte Lip Creams are "surprisingly durable and, unlike some matte lipstick formulas, also moisturizing." Unfortunately, I do not find these to be hydrating at all but rather, they're quite drying. Due to the soft texture, Istanbul also emphasized the lines of my lips, making them appear more dry than they actually are. The product does not absorb into the lips and therefore does not promote hydration. I highly suggest prepping your lips with a moisturizing balm before applying Soft Matte Lip Creams - this will help prevent the product from drying out your lips.

The best way I have found to wear Istanbul is to layer it on top of a lipstick.  I never wear it alone since it's so drying, which is a shame because I've heard a lot about these products around the beauty community.  If you have hydrated lips and don't have any qualms about a product emphasizing your lip lines, then by all means, give this a shot.  I don't think I'll be repurchasing any more of these products, I much prefer matte lipsticks. Let me know in the comments if you've tried the Soft Matte Lip Creams and how you got along with them!
